What is Duraphat Toothpaste used for?

Duraphat high fluoride toothpaste is a licensed product used for the prevention of dental caries in adults aged 16 and over. Fluoride is used worldwide to help prevent caries. The higher concentrations of fluoride in Duraphat compared to regular toothpaste provide greater anti-caries benefits, with increasing increments up to 5000ppm fluoride. The higher the strength, the better the caries prevention result (Source: Colgate). Duraphat toothpaste may also be prescribed for sensitive teeth.

Duraphat has been shown to reduce root carious lesions by 76%. For this reason, Duraphat has been trusted as the market leader in high fluoride toothpaste for many years.

For patients, there is minimum disruption to their daily routine – simply a change of toothpaste. This helps to maximise compliance. It’s particularly suitable for patients with exposed root surfaces, high sugar diets, orthodontic appliances and dry mouth (xerostomia).

What’s the active ingredient in Duraphat?

The active ingredient is sodium fluoride: for example, in Colgate Duraphat 5000ppm, sodium fluoride is present at a level of 1.1%, or 500mg fluoride per 100g paste. Sodium fluoride applied topically reduces caries by inhibiting demineralisation and promoting remineralisation of the tooth surface. It’s effective on both enamel and dentine.

Is Duraphat a prescription only medicine (POM)?

As a prescription-only medicine, Duraphat can only be provided to patients by suitably qualified professionals. The prescription can be dispensed at a pharmacy or dental practice, but the product can’t be bought over the counter by patients.

How long does a tube of Duraphat toothpaste last? How many tubes of Duraphat should I prescribe to a patient?

Colgate recommend that one tube lasts around one month, so sufficient product should be prescribed to last until the date of the patient’s next recall appointment.

What strength Duraphat should I prescribe?

Duraphat 2800ppm fluoride toothpaste is indicated for patients aged 10 years and above. Duraphat 5000ppm is indicated for patients aged 16 years and above.
